What is OCD?

An anxiety disorder characterized by thoughts that are intrusive, that result in fear, apprehension, uneasiness and repetitive behavior intended to minimize the accompanying anxiety, is a known as Obsessive Compulsive Disorder (OCD). OCD can result in symptoms that are can be time consuming and can result in alienating other people. Sufferers often recognize their compulsions and obsessions as irrational and unreasonable, which only adds to the distress of OCD.

Symptoms include performing a task a certain number of times such as closing and opening a door a fixed number of times prior to exiting or entering a room. A person suffering from OCD may be compulsive about washing or cleaning something multiple times. Symptoms also include repeated checking, hoarding, an aversion to certain numbers, and preoccupation with violent, religious or sexual thoughts. Some of the symptoms can cause financial and emotional distress.

Treatments for OCD

More than 3 million Americans are affected by Obsessive Compulsive Disorder (OCD) every year. OCD usually begins during adolescence or early adulthood. OCD compels the sufferer to perform certain actions and will cause feelings of extreme panic and guilt. If not treated, OCD will reach levels of fright and will impact the sufferer’s career, home life and relationships. The causes are biological in nature, and OCD treatments are available.

Symptoms of Obsessive Compulsive Disorder (OCD) includes obsessions and compulsions. OCD obsessions are unwanted and persistent ideas that are repeated. The repetitions never seem to make sense. The obsessions arise when the sufferer is trying to do other things.

OCD obsessions seem to have a theme such as fear of dirt and sanitary contamination or items being in an orderly and symmetrical manner. Some people with OCD have horrific or aggressive impulses. Obsession signs and symptoms include the fear of contamination by touching items and even shaking hands, extreme doubts that doors and windows are locked or the stove was properly turned off.
